About This Post

In this post, I take a look at 2 samples: randomly selected 20,000 FPL teams and the top 10,000 FPL teams. Because of the law of large numbers, we can make inferences about the overall FPL league based on the statistics for the random sample. Interval estimates for most statistics for the whole FPL game are also available. If you’re familiar with the concept of confidence intervals, you can point at a specific number characterising the random sample to see 99% confidence intervals for the respective number characterising all the 3 million FPL managers.

  1. Great info Smarty Pants. I miss your posts on FFS!
I was wondering if there are many ghost teams in the top 10k or 1k, is that something you can find out? – It’d be interesting to know the proportion now after the January wildcard.

    • Nah, not many. But it depends on what you consider a ghost team. This one has the lowest number of transfers since the start of the season (only 2 + WC): http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/1427965/event-history/26/
Only 7 teams in the top 10K have made less than 10 transfers all season… Obviously, there are some teams who have stopped playing recently, but I don’t think there are many of them and I’d need to do a special research to find out their exact amount 🙂

      • Wow that’s interesting, not many then!
I’d define a team which hasn’t done any transfers in the last two weeks as a ghost team as this means they’ve wasted a tranfer which at the very least could have been used to freshen up injuries, benchers orchanges in fixtures.
The likelihood they genuinly had no reason to do transfers two weeks in row is negligible.
Is there a chance you can find out what percentage of managers in the top 10k didn’t do transfers in either of the last two weeks?

        • Yeah, I think I could write an update of my first Dawn of the Dead article and include such stats for the top 10K. I’ve been planning a new research article for ages, but struggling to find some free time and motivation…

          • yeah that article was what got me wandering how the situation is now when some start giving up. I would love to read such information but I’ve loved everything you’ve done already.
Jan/Feb blues eh, I know the feeling! 🙂
